The Strange, Extraordinary, or Interesting (SExI) game of this week definitely falls into all of those categories, which makes it one of my favorite games ever. The game is Rez made by United Game Artists (UGA).
This game can be a little hard to explain both mechanic and story, so I’m going to try my best. Imagine a rail shooter like House of the Dead with an unique rhythm mechanic.
You are a hacker inside of a network who is trying to unlock a conscious trapped in the machine, so you must proceed through various barriers like fire walls and defeat enemies like virus software.
The way you defeat these aggressive applications is you aim at them, next target them by holding a button, and finally release said button to shoot. However the shots do not immediately come out, but shoot once it syncs with the rhythm of the song which then adds additional parts to the song.
One of the major goals of the developers was to provoke synesthesia through a video game. Which that can be defined as
A neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.
In other words you can taste color and see sound. The main ways they attempted to achieve this is with a highly stylized minimalist graphics, a powerful soundtrack, and a pulsing controller. Speaking of the pulsing controller, the special edition Japanese Playstation 2 release of this game came with an additional peripheral called the trance vibrator. This functioned like the dual shock controller but with a more powerful vibrating mechanism, which was meant to either be held, placed in ones pocket, or sat on. It also came with a protective case. If you wanted to get your girlfriend into video games, this may be a good place to start.
This is a very hard game to describe, since it really is like no other, and ever since has only spawned one sequel called Child of Eden. I highly recommend anyone looking for an unique experience, albeit short, to pick up a copy of this game which is available for Playstation 2, Dreamcast, and Xbox 360. Rez is truly is a Spectacular, Extraordinary, and Interesting (SExI) game.
